About the Indiana Nonprofit Paid Employment Analysis

Nonprofit organizations has played an important role in the economic well-being of the state of Indiana since at least 1995. As of 2021:

  • Nonprofits employed 10% of all paid workers in Indiana (up from 7% in 1995)
  • Nonprofits accounted for 10% of the total indiana payroll (up from 6% in 1995)
  • Nonprofits made up 5% of all workplace establishments in Indiana (up from 4 % in 1995)

Our ongoing analysis of Indiana nonprofit employment seeks to document the significant - and changing - role of Indiana nonprofits in the state's economy by providing detailed information on the size, composition, and distribution of paid employment in the private nonprofit sector in Indiana and in its eleven Economic Growth Regions.

Who is Conducting the Analysis?

The analysis of Indiana nonprofit employment is directed by Kirsten Grønbjerg, Distinguished Professor Emerita at Indiana UniversityBloomington. It is a joint effort by the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University, and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
