Selected Counties
Our ongoing analysis of Indiana nonprofit employment is a joint effort by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University to document the significant impact of nonprofits on Indiana’s economy by providing detailed information on the size, composition, and distribution of paid employment in the private nonprofit sector in Indiana.
Nonprofit organizations play an important role in the economic well-being of the state of Indiana as a whole, as well as in individual counties.
In the state of Indiana:
- Nonprofits employ 9 percent of the total workforce.
- Nonprofits account for 9 percent of total statewide payroll.
- Nonprofits make up 5 percent of total workplace establishments.
Profiles regarding the impact of nonprofit employment have been created for all Indiana counties with populations of 50,000 or higher. Profiles were not created for counties with smaller populations because of data confidentiality issues.
